While at Myrtle, we ventured off the beaten path a bit and found a zoo called Waccatee Zoological Farm . I have always liked animals, and consequently, zoos. This particular zoo is possibly the most "redneck" zoo I have ever been to. The fences were a mix of chain link and chicken wire and a lot of the enclosures looked like cheap 3-sided sheds. One of the most interesting things we noticed was that at least 3 of the enclosures had grills in them, like the barbecue type. Granted, they seemed to be in enclosures where there appeared to not be any animals at the time, but I wondered if it was a reminder to the animals not to act up...Anyway, it turned out to be a pretty good time, what with the peacocks roaming free and the bazillion friendly goats (by far the largest animal population there). One of the highlights was a brand new miniature horse that had been born at 8:30am that morning. He was a mere 3-hours old when we got to see him. I've attached a short video of him here:
Another highlight was watching one particular baby goat climb on top of a small stack of concrete blocks and jump off, over and over. The zoo was actually bigger than we had at first thought and it was a fun time. I would recommend it for a couple hour break from the commercialism of Myrtle.
